One of the biggest advantages of cloth nappies is longevity, but only if they’re cared for properly. With the right habits, a good set of nappies can last through multiple children and still perform well!
1. Get your wash routine right early
This is the single most important factor. Consistent, effective washing prevents:
-
Fabric breakdown
-
Elastic damage
-
Absorbency issues.
2. Avoid detergent extremes
Too little detergent leads to buildup and too much can leave residue. Both can affect fabric integrity over time. Stick to a balanced, appropriate dose based on your machine, load size, and water type!
3. Dry with care
High heat is one of the fastest ways to wear out nappies.
-
Air drying is ideal
-
If using a tumble dryer, keep it on a low setting.
-
Avoid regularly overheating elastics and waterproof layers.
4. Rotate your stash
Using the same few nappies repeatedly while others sit unused creates uneven wear. A well-rotated stash spreads the load and extends overall lifespan, even if you do have favourite prints (we do too!)
5. Store properly between children
If you’re saving nappies for the future, make sure they’re completely clean before storing and store them in a dry, breathable space. When you bring them back into use, a simple reset wash is usually enough.
6. Replace strategically, not entirely
You don’t always need a whole new set. Often, replacing a few of your liners or any heavily used pieces is enough to get you through another cloth bum babe in their nappy wearing years!
