So, you’ve heard about cloth nappies. Maybe you've seen a few cute prints online, maybe your eco-conscious friend is raving about how much money they’re saving. But deep down you’re thinking:
How do these actually work?
If that’s you — welcome! You’re in the right place. Cloth nappies aren’t complicated, we promise. Let’s break it down so it actually makes sense.
Cloth nappies work just like disposables, but... are reusable!
At their core, cloth nappies do the same job as a disposable. They catch wees and poos, keep your baby comfortable, and protect clothing from leaks. The only real difference is that instead of throwing them away, you wash and reuse them.
Simple, right?
What makes up a cloth nappy?
Every cloth nappy has two key parts:
1. The absorbent part (this soaks up the wee)
2. The waterproof outer (this keeps the moisture and poop contained)
In our modern cloth nappies, the absorbent part is usually made up of inserts or boosters. These are made from high-performance materials like bamboo, hemp, or cotton which is soft on skin but tough on moisture. The outer shell has a waterproof layer to keep leaks locked in.
The best part? Everything’s adjustable, from the snaps to the inserts, so you can customise the fit and absorbency for your baby.
Our nappies are designed to grow with your baby from around 3.5kg (8lbs) up to toddlerhood. They are one-size-fits-all, meaning the snaps adjust to fit your baby’s shape and size as they grow. Plus, if you choose our all-in-one nappies, this means the absorbent insert is already attached inside the waterproof shell. Just snap on, and you’re ready to go. Easy to use, easy to wash, and no complicated parts to keep track of.
How do you change a cloth nappy?
Just like a disposable. Open, wipe, remove the dirty nappy, and put a clean one on.
Instead of tossing the used one in the bin, you pop it in a wet bag until wash day. If there’s poo, tip it into the toilet first (if baby is on solids), or bin the disposable liner if used. Then wash, dry, and reuse.
Easy.
How many do you need?
If you’re using cloth full-time, around 18-25 nappies is ideal. For part-time use, 8-10 is a great start. That gives you time to wash every 1–2 days without running out.
Not sure how many you need? We’ve got bundles designed for every stage, from curious beginners to full-time cloth families.
