We get it — one of the biggest hesitations when starting cloth is the washing. It sounds messy. It sounds hard. But here’s the truth:
Washing cloth nappies is simple, and once you’ve done it a few times, it’ll feel like second nature.
Let’s walk you through it, step by step:
Step 1: Store dirty nappies in a wet bag
After each change, simply shake off any solids into the toilet (if your baby is on solids) and place the used nappy in a wet bag. There's no need to soak nappies in water or buckets, dry storage is cleaner and more effective.
You could also opt to use a disposable nappy liner which goes between baby and the nappy, simply bin the liner on changing and follow the next steps.
We recommend using a nappy bucket with a mesh liner or a nappy pail (wet bag) that you can throw straight into the wash later.
We’ve got a variety of wet bag sizes to suit every cloth journey, whether you’re using nappies full time or just part time. From compact single-nappy bags for quick outings to large double-pocket bags that hold a day’s worth (or more), there’s something to suit every need. They’re leakproof, stylish, and a total game-changer for keeping mess contained while on the go or at home. Shop Wet Bags.
Step 2: Pre-wash every 1–2 days
Do a short pre-wash cycle which is usually a quick 30–60 minute cycle at around 40–60°C. The goal here is to rinse out urine and any residual solids before the main wash.
Don’t skip this step — it helps prevent build-up and keeps nappies smelling fresh.
Step 3: Main wash
After your pre-wash, it’s time for the deep clean. Run a long, hot wash (at 40–60°C) with a full dose of detergent, following the guidelines on your detergent packaging for a heavily soiled load.
You can add other small items like baby clothes, towels or cloth wipes to bulk out the load, which helps improve agitation.
Step 4: Drying your nappies
Line drying is best for your nappies and the sun is a natural stain remover. Inserts and nappies can also go in the dryer on a low heat if needed, especially in cooler months.
Avoid high heat on covers, as it can damage the waterproof layer and elastics over time.
Quick tips
· Never use fabric softeners (this will coat fibers and affect absorbency)
· Wash every 2–3 days to avoid ammonia build-up
· Always do a pre-wash before your main wash
· If in doubt, check your washing machine manual and detergent label for best settings
