We get this one all the time — and if you’re new to cloth nappies (and nappy changes in general), it’s totally fair to wonder:
"How often should I be changing my baby in cloth compared to disposables?"
The simple answer? Every 2–3 hours during the day (earlier of soiled - just like a disposable), and as needed overnight, depending on your baby’s age, output, and the absorbency of your nappy setup.
But let’s break it down properly…
Daytime changes: every 2–3 hours
Just like with disposables, cloth nappies should be changed every 2 to 3 hours during the day to keep your baby comfy, dry, and rash-free. Wetness sensitivity varies from baby to baby, but regular changing helps prevent leaks and keeps delicate skin happy.
If your baby has done a poo, change them as soon as possible, regardless of how long the nappy’s been on.
Overnight changes: every 8-12 hours
The goal with overnight nappies is long-lasting absorbency. With the right combination of boosters and inserts, many babies can go 8–12 hours in one nappy without needing a change — especially once they’re sleeping through the night.
If your baby wakes frequently or is a heavy wetter, you might need to tweak your setup or do a quick change during a night feed.
What about newborns?
Newborns wee and poo a lot, so expect to change cloth nappies every 1.5 to 2 hours, or up to 12 times a day in those early weeks (you can see how those disposable nappies can soon add up!).
This is totally normal, and honestly? You’d be changing disposables just as often (if not more). The bonus with cloth is you’re not throwing a bin full of nappies away each day.
Quick tips:
· Add extra inserts if you need longer absorbency (for car rides, naps, or overnight)
· A well-fitting nappy helps prevent leaks and holds in messes, read more on How to fit a reusable nappy correctly
· If you’re unsure, just peek or feel. Cloth nappies don’t puff up like disposables, so checking becomes second nature.
Cloth is flexible
One of the best things about cloth nappies is that they grow with your baby and your routine. Whether you’re using cloth part-time, full-time, or somewhere in between, you’ll quickly get a feel for your little one’s rhythm.
